Our Hymnal is truly one of a kind. Putting together the music and lyrics consumed thousands of hours, making the most of every page, and countless more hours spent with headphones on, searching for soulful, majestic, and theologically rich hymns. We very much would like to share this wonderful hymnal with more people.

One thing that adds to its uniqueness is the inclusion of fifteen or so hymns like those often featured at the end of older Country Music and Bluegrass shows.

It’s likely that some people attending music shows from the 1930s through the 1980s had never heard a hymn sung, let alone experienced one performed live. A closing hymn at the end of those old shows may well have planted seeds that later grew into more than one person’s salvation in Christ.

Hank Williams Sr. passed away from heart issues worsened by drugs and alcohol, but I believe that at some point he was influenced by a devout Christian. That influence seemed to give him the depth of feeling to sing hymns so passionately and to write “House of Gold.” (John 8:7)

The same thoughts cross my mind for others too, like Elvis with his heartfelt take on “Amazing Grace,” and the Louvin Brothers singing “If We Forget God” with those perfect sibling harmonies that lit up the honky-tonks of the ’50s and ’60s. They’re all gone now, and the Pastor in me can’t help but wonder where they are today.

Our 531 Book of Hymns features a mix of familiar traditional hymns and other traditional ones you might not have heard before. We sing along to piano recordings of hymns and some of the most beautiful hymn vocals ever captured by solo artists, duos, duets, with a touch of Gospel Bluegrass, and choirs like the ones listed below.
